After Madhya Pradesh, the film ‘The Kerala Story’ has been declared tax-free in Uttar Pradesh. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on his official Twitter handle.
The Chief Minister is also expected to attend a special screening of the film with Cabinet ministers.
The move comes a day after the Madhya Pradesh government took a similar decision. The film, directed by Sudipto Sen, depicts how women from Kerala were forced to convert to Islam and recruited by the terror group Islamic State (IS).
West Bengal Bans The Kerala Story To ‘Maintain Peace’
The film has kicked up a political storm and has been banned in West Bengal. Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the decision on Monday at the state secretariat. The announcement came just minutes after Mamata Banerjee alleged that “the BJP was funding a film on Bengal on the lines of Kashmir Files“. The Bengal chief minister has directed the state chief secretary to ensure the film is removed from screens running it in the state. Mamata Banerjee said the decision has been taken to “maintain peace in Bengal” and avoid any incident of hate crime and violence.
The Kerala Story Gets Support From BJP
Despite West Bengal banning the film, the Uttar Pradesh government has decided to make it tax-free in the state, following Madhya Pradesh.
The film has received support from the Bharatiya Janata Party with Prime Minister Narendra Modi praising the film for creating awareness about the issue of forced conversion.
The move by the Uttar Pradesh government to make the film tax-free is expected to create a positive impact on the film’s box office collections.
